Danka Dimitrijević’s art has long since been involved in the shapes of orchids that referred to the psychological and spiritual contents of people. Orchids have since this exhibition been replaced by birds in a revolutionary flight, portrayed as semi-abstract, associated with symbolism.

In Dimitrijević’s work, the bird has more meaning than just its form; through its environment it associates elements of the earth – gold, nafta, silver, diamonds, rocks. Each of these elements has its geological as well as political connotation. Not only is nafta a source of bloodshed in the east, it is now also the sight of birds covered in guck proceeding the British Petroleum leek incident in Mexico’s gulf – perhaps one of the most haunting images of our age. The picture of our potential ecological end. Dimitrijević’s black bird, named “Good morning people, the war continues”, is the barer of such news. Moreover, even optimistic days in the current climate will use and interpret the same black bird as its mascot: she rose upwards towards the skies even as everything weighed her down. The Black Phoenix. Dimitrijević’s birds carry news, burdened, in comparison to our hazed minds lost in the confusion of the everyday.

The artist uses a polyutherane foam as a primer on for her wood canvases, allowing her to paint on the specific surface as well as transform the birds into sculptures breaking out of the surfaces.

The artist does not use sketches or plans, she creates directly from her imagination where color is the fluid variable.
